What is a Professional Organizer?
According to the National Association of Professional Organizers (NAPO), the official definition of a Professional Organizer is someone who “enhances the lives of clients by designing systems and processes using organizing principles and through transferring organizing skills. A Professional Organizer also educates the public on organizing solutions and the resulting benefits.”
More specifically, professional organizers have the skills, knowledge and expertise to address your organizing needs. We provide our clients with ideas, information and solutions to their organizing problems.
Why should I hire a Professional Organizer that is a member of NAPO?
The National Association of Professional Organizers (NAPO) is recognized as the premiere association for organizers. NAPO offers organizers many opportunities to sharpen their skills through ongoing education and professional development. NAPO has a Code of Ethics by which members have agreed to abide. A professional organizer who is a NAPO member has made an added commitment to their business and to you, the client.
How long will it take for me to get organized?
We will work together in three to four-hour organizing sessions. For most clients, four hours is a comfortable amount of time to make good progress on a project, without becoming overwhelmed or fatigued. The number of sessions necessary to accomplish your goals will vary depending upon several factors: How many spaces do you want to organize, how large are the spaces, and what is the volume of your possessions? It will also depend upon how involved you want to be and at what pace you feel comfortable making decisions. I will provide support to help you make the necessary decisions by asking questions and offering advice.
Why do I need to be present while my space is being organized?
During your organizing sessions, you will need to answer questions and make decisions about your possessions and your spaces. As I guide you through the process, you will gain insight into what has caused you to be disorganized in the past and how to maintain your organized spaces in the future. While it is normally best if you work along with me, there are elements of the organizing process that I may perform without your participation, such as sorting/categorizing or containing/labeling. Ultimately, by devoting your full attention and energy to each organizing session, you will reach your organizing goals sooner and with greater success.
Will I have to get rid of many of my possessions?
No, you will never be forced to get rid of anything. Only you can decide if an item is really useful or important to you. My goal is to guide you to make decisions that will transform your home into a functional space and one in which you feel productive, peaceful and relaxed. During our sessions, many clients come to realize some of their possessions aren’t useful or even appealing to them anymore. By deciding to let go of those things, they are able to create more space for what they really love and use. Ultimately, the final decisions will be yours.
I'm embarrassed about how my space looks.
Please do not feel embarrassed! All of my clients have messy and disorganized spaces – otherwise they wouldn’t need my services. As a professional, I am there to provide solutions to help you, not to judge you. In fact, please don’t feel the need to straighten up before I arrive. Seeing your spaces in their present condition will help me create organizing solutions customized for you and how you function in those spaces.
